Pfizer and BioNTech have made great strides towards creating a COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, their most recent study reported their vaccines had a 90% effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 in patients who otherwise had no history with the virus. Finally, it seems, the end is near. But, being so close to the light at the end of the tunnel can tempt people into being careless. I’ve been cautious all this time, wearing a mask for months, social distancing, I’ve followed all the guidelines, and it’s almost over so it’s fine to slack off just a little bit, we’re almost done anyway! Admittedly, these intrusive thoughts cross my own mind too. But now more than ever is the time to double-down, and be more vigilant than ever before.

But even if you haven’t been the cookie-cutter guideline follower, there’s still a need to proceed with care. Think of it like this: You’re driving to point A, 1000 miles away. You’re speeding through the freeway at 80 miles per hour. Now you’re 10 minutes from your destination. Do you still speed? No. Why would you if you’re so close to the finish line? At that point, the risk-reward of speeding and breaking the rules to satisfy personal desires isn’t worth more than simple obedience. The vaccine is the same way. Maybe you have (and don’t worry, I won’t tell!) been breaking the rules. But please, I implore you, it’s never too late to start easing your foot off the gas pedal, and following along. We’re almost at the finish line, and cooperation is critical in bringing us to a brighter, safer, and happier future!
